Jared Hartley, Hartley's Tavern - Employer
Together with his parents Jim and Janine, Jared Hartley opened Hartleys Tavern at 19 Elizabeth Street in Picton in 2017. From produce and protein to wine and beer, showcasing Prince Edward County’s unique terroir and high quality service have made Hartley’s a local fine dining favourite.
In 2023, Jared was on the hunt for some local ingredients for the restaurant when he happened to meet Hudson Yarrow at a local coffee shop. The two chatted and Hudson’s keen interest in working in the culinary industry was clearly apparent. Jared recalls, “Like every good restaurant owner, I’m always hiring so I invited Hudson to come by. Community Living Prince Edward got in touch with me and that was the start of his employment at Hartleys.”
Soon after, Hudson joined the team as their newest kitchen staff member. Jared quickly became familiar with the support Community Living Prince Edward provides for people who live with intellectual disabilities. “It’s really inspiring to see how the organization helps people achieve their ambitions. I appreciate how Community Living helps people who have lots of skills, are willing and able to work to find meaningful employment here in the County.”
Working with Hudson has also helped Jared to enhance how he coaches and mentors his entire team. Jared shares, “I’ve personally gained a lot in terms of building my people management and communication skills. Having staff who trust you and are truly behind you is the most important thing I’ve learned as a chef.”
